Character Name: Uzumaki Naruto
Canon source: Naruto, the manga

Personality: Naruto is, at times, both reckless and cunning, both selfless and selfish, remaining devoid of tact even though he's been blessed with more empathy than nearly anyone else in the series. Because Naruto was ostracized as a child, he also grew up to be the type of person who not only craved attention, but who also defined himself by what kind of attention he received.

Naruto is very open with his likes and his dislikes, with what he believes to be absolutely right and absolutely wrong. He will never lie to himself, will never spare someone the truth of the matter if he can help it, and remains so doggedly focused on pursuing his dreams that he's sometimes blinded by his cause. Naruto is goal-oriented -- almost pigheadedly so, at times -- but focuses more on the how of things instead of the why, most often coming to his conclusions based on gut feelings or a quick assessment of surface characteristics. He's devoted to what he believes is correct, but is also very, very naive in what he does believe, usually falling back on maxims or codes of honor to support his actions.

Since he wears his heart out on his sleeve so often, Naruto also takes offense to things both big and small fairly quickly, usually defaulting to threats of violence or petty name-calling whenever someone points out the faults they see in either his person or his actions. This, however, doesn't mean that Naruto is a bleeding heart forever looking to start a fight with people who disagree with him -- no, Naruto is more the type to show others what is most wrong with themselves through his words and actions, never judging anyone or anything outright despite whatever misgivings he may have at the time. He'll see someone as evil if they present themselves to him as such, but believes that people aren't always as they seem.

That said, Naruto is still very, very, very immature for someone his age. Whereas many of his friends grew up in relatively loving households -- the Hyuuga notwithstanding -- Naruto grew up as both an orphan and someone who was hated and discriminated against by the majority of his village. This means that, again, Naruto defined himself by the kind of attention he got, and decided at a relatively young age to act out and receive that attention.

This acting out took the form in the many harmless -- and not so harmless -- pranks and practical jokes that Naruto soon became famous for. It also led the blond to develop a very strange and...almost masochistic mental complex where he could only express what he really felt through his fists. This, in turn, led Naruto to seemingly and subconsciously confuse the concept of abuse with his concept of love, as all of his closest bonds with those around are those born out of strife, or pain.

He is not attached to the concept of parents -- and very rarely wonders about his own parentage -- because of this, focusing more on reaffirming bonds that he can immediate gratification out of; to Naruto, Sakura has to hit him when he professes his love to her because that's what love is, and Sasuke has to fight with Naruto over everything because that's what friends do. He's never been exposed to what normal relationships between children are, so, even at sixteen he's still a brat who won't think about compromise or understanding when he get what he wants through force of will alone.

Naruto is basically a socially awkward child continuously caught in a cycle of needing his existence to be reaffirmed through violence, as this is both another type of attention -- which, remember, he is a glutton for -- and the only way he can understand what other people are all about. Since he's had to fight for everything he wanted, other people's problems only begin to make sense -- or have any gravity -- when they're shoved into his face or backed with a fist; this doesn't mean, however, that Naruto is inherently violent or stupid. He's just a very hands-on, very driven person that learns through doing, and who finally masters things when he's had several chances to mess up, pick himself back up, and try again. And again. And again, all the way until he gets it right.

History: Here!

Strengths: As befitting the main character of a long-running Shounen manga, Naruto is a powerhouse of natural talent cultivated into an almost physical force of nature through years of hard work, sacrifice, and danger. He's got a proficiency for causing mayhem big and small, a mind as sharp as a blade when it comes to the things that interest him, and packs enough physical stamina and resilience to take a beating that would leave most others catatonic several times over. He's said to be one of the strongest shinobi alive, is sometimes referred to as a genius of hard work alongside one other member of his canon, and continually manages to outsmart, outperform, and just all around outpace nearly everyone else he has to share the spotlight with; in short, he's everything a hero should be, and all of this without the help of the demonic entitiy living inside of his body.

You see, on top of Naruto being rather gifted at what he does, the boy is also a Jinchuuriki, or, a person imbued with "the power of human sacrifice." This means that, at any given moment, Naruto can draw upon the power of the creature living inside of him to fuel the many feats of destruction and daring that he's slowly becoming so famous for. This being -- named "The Nine-Tailed Fox" for rather obvious reasons -- can also warp Naruto's form, infusing him with its own special brand of Demonic Chakra, which only further empowers Naruto at the cost of him losing his humanity bit by bit the more he draws upon it.

That aside, Naruto's main strength doesn't come from his amazing abilities; rather, in spite of supposed being a soulless killing machine -- aka: a proper "Shinobi" -- Naruto somehow manages to connect with people on a very base, very human level. This means that, again, despite being part of a group of children trained to be assassins, Naruto is still very much the empathetic child, turning his enemies into allies whenever he can and at sometimes great cost to himself. He doesn't give up on others, doesn't judge people unless they present themselves to be irrecoverably evil -- re: Orochimaru -- and sees every person he meets for exactly what they present themselves to be; there's very little gray in Naruto's world, and people just seem to gravitate to him for it.

All of that said, with every strength the boy possesses, there also has to come a downfall.

Weaknesses:
This downfall would be, of course, that whenever Naruto does draw upon the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox, its chakra also slowly eats away at him, dissolving the seal that keeps the beast inside of him bit by bit, so that every time its energy fills Naruto a little more of its personality also filters through. Its utter dissolution, as you can imagine, would mean the death of both Naruto, as he would be completely taken over by the thing, and also the death of everyone he ever cared about, as the Fox holds a grudge against the Leaf village for sealing it inside of Naruto in the first place.

Mentally, Naruto's weaknesses would have to be how easy he comes to trust others, how naive he is in many things children his age are already aware of, and also how dogged he is in getting his own way when he believes he's in the right, come hell or high water. Furthermore, Naruto's sometimes painful social awkwardness -- he grew up mostly by himself -- combined with his acute need to forever be there for everyone sometimes ends up getting in the way of what he really wants to do, leaving him and those he cares about easily manipulated so long as they know how to press Naruto's buttons. He doesn't back down, doesn't know when to quit when he's ahead, and easily retreats into himself whenever a harsh blow is dealt to both his ego or his views on how life is supposed to work.

Preferred drop-in point: Wherever.
What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment?
Ideally, I'd like to get him out there to explore the environment, and to maybe get to know the people around him and bring joy to their dreary little lives.

First Person Journal Sample:

Oi! OI! What the hell is going on here? This is not where I need to be right now!

[ There's frantic movement -- running, obviously. ]

--There's a stupid Fox that needs to get his ass whupped and I'm the only one who can do it! I don't have time to be messin' around here.

[ A pause. ]

Wherever here is...[ There's a rustle of cloth. ] --Okay, Naruto: think. You were fighting the Ninetails and kickin' its ass every way from here to Sunday, and then...Then...

[ And we're back at frantic again. ]

I want some answers, dammit! Where am I? Who did this? Where'z Octo-dude and Yamato?! The Leaf Village's Number One Hokage Candidate ain't gonna be pushed around like this!!!

Third Person Sample:
There is a sort of...trepidation going up his spine, once he sets foot behind the waterfall leading into the Jinchuuriki Shrine. It's a small, annoying thing that makes his steps take that much longer to complete, that makes him flick his eyes back and forth, ever on-edge for whatever danger may come his way. Though he knows he is well-protected -- and, better yet, knows full-well he is well capable of protecting himself -- the atmosphere of the place...the tensity of the situation at hand: they're clouds of self-doubt he can't dispel, a stomach ache that he just can't get over.

Naruto's knows that he's afraid -- he'd be a fool not to be. Even after defeating the thing that called himself his "Hatred," even after hearing that Killerbee had done this exact same thing first, he still...he still doubts himself, still wonders what will happen when it comes to the Kyuubi.

Anything else would only take a week to master, a a battle to befriend; Naruto had been plagued by the Kyuubi for a lifetime, and it's only now that he's facing it head-on.

What will happen?

His mind runs over all the millions of ways what they're planning could go wrong: the Kyuubi could break free, he could falter at the last moment and hurt himself, the Kyuubi could take over his body and break free using it, his dark side could take over, Killerbee could go insane for no reason at all, Madara could strike now, surprising them all, or that one guy who always refused to take his money for food when he was smaller could somehow show up and--

He shakes his head, and continues walking down the path set out before him. There wouldn't be much point in stressing about all the "what ifs," now, would there? Especially when he's so close to getting what he wants, to finally put an end to all the fighting.

The road ahead will be tough, but not insurmountable. He knows this. Despite every trepidation, every doubt made manifest, Naruto knows he can be the man everyone else pictures him to be. He can be that savior, that hero Konoha needs to take them out from the darkness.

"You ready, kid?"

He nods, clenching his first.

"Yeah, let's do this!"

When he sees the Kyuubi, doubt is the furthest thing from his mind.

"Yo, Fox -- that chakra you're hoarding is gonna be mine! Get ready for it!!"

Too many people are counting on him to succeed.
